The UEFA European Football Championship, commonly referred to as the EURO, is a quadrennial men’s association football competition.
The idea for a pan-European football tournament was first proposed by Henri Delaunay, the French Football Federation’s secretary-general, in 1927. However, the tournament was not started until 1958, three years after Delaunay’s death.
In honor of Delaunay, the trophy awarded to the champions is named after him.
The 1960 tournament, held in France, had four teams competing in the finals out of 17 that entered the competition.
The Soviet Union won the 1960 tournament, beating Yugoslavia 2–1 in a tense final in Paris.
The format of the tournament has changed several times since its inception, with the number of teams expanding from four to 16 in 1996, and then to 24 in 2016.
The most recent championship, held across Europe in 2021, was won by Italy, who lifted their second European title after beating England in the final at Wembley Stadium in London on penalties.
